Walter Carol "Bud" Sullins

Sep 23, 1936 — Oct 14, 2026

Chauncey, WV

Walter Carol “Bud” Sullins, 90, of Chauncey, West Virginia, departed his earthly life on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, in his home in Chauncey.

Walter was born on September 23, 1936, in Johnson City, TN. He spent his early childhood in Logan before moving to Raccoon Creek near Wayne County, West Virginia, where he spent his teenage and early adult years. Those years held a special place in Walter’s heart, providing him with a lifetime of treasured memories and stories he loved sharing with family and friends.

In 1954, Walter proudly answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army. He served with the 11th Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and was later stationed in Munich, Germany, where he continued his military service. Walter carried a deep sense of pride in having served his country, and his time in the Army remained one of the most meaningful chapters of his life. He never grew tired of reminiscing about his military days and sharing stories of the “good ol’ days.”Walter faithfully flew the American flag high above his home each day, a lasting symbol of his love, respect, and devotion to the country he was so proud to serve.

Following his military service, Walter returned to Logan , where he met the love of his life, Sarah Russell. They spent most of their years in their home in Chauncey, where they raised their two daughters, Lucy and Leah.

Walter was a man who found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. He loved fishing, camping, and working with his hands. There was hardly anything he wouldn’t try to fix, take apart, or tinker with, and he always seemed to find another project to keep himself busy. He also had a special love for music and could often be found playing his favorite songs over and over on whatever music player he could get his hands on. Those familiar tunes, much like the stories he loved to tell, became part of the memories his family will forever hold dear.

As the years passed, Walter was blessed with two of his most treasured titles: Granddad and, later, “Old Papaw.” His granddaughter and great-grandchildren brought a special kind of joy to his later years, filling his life with love, laughter, and precious moments that will remain part of his family’s story for generations to come.

Walter leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory, including his devoted daughters, Lucy (Chuck) Vinson and Leah Sullins Kinzer; his beloved granddaughter, Brittany (Jacob) Long; and his precious great-grandchildren, Brody, Grayson, Carter, and Cannyn Rose Long. He also leaves behind a host of sister and brother in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were touched by his presence.

Walter was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sarah Russell Sullins; his parents, Henderson Sullins and Lucy Barnett Sullins, his brothers, Bill Sullins and Larry Spriggs, and his sisters Joann Bezak and Norma Jean Mendel.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Walter’s life on Friday, October 16, 2026, at Collins Funeral Home in Switzer, West Virginia. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., followed by a brief service. Burial will follow at the family cemetery in Chauncey, West Virginia, where Walter will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Sarah and his treasured mother.

Although our hearts are heavy and his absence will be deeply felt, we find comfort in our faith and in God’s promise that this earthly life is not the end. Walter’s journey here on earth has come to a close, but we hold tightly to the hope that he has been welcomed into the loving arms of our Heavenly Father.
